DMR predictions for 1981:
Pop radio will continue to see big crossover action from the discos. More radio stations will shift to a more dance-oriented sound as the word 'disco' fades into nostalgia and the word dance takes on positive connotation....
Musically, the trend to diversity will continue. DOR crossover, a little more raggae acceptance and a continuing move back to Euro-sound.

Stephanie Shepherd joins the DMR team!

DMR year end Top 20 were aired by Chuck Leonard
from WXLO.

Fantasy Records has dropped ist disco department.

  MC's Invade Ritz

Wednesday, April 11th, an historic and auspicious event occured at the Ritz. Sugar Hill Records show- cased most of their hot black street artists who helped pioneer the 'rap' phenomenon.
The show opendened with a rapping Ventriloquist. Next up was The Funky Four Plus One. After that The Sequence and Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five. At the end Flash dedicates the evening to disco and the DJ's.
Finally the Sugarhill Gang - but they couldn't compete with Flash. When it comes to the party give us the Grandmaster...... A special DJ mixing console was set up on the stage for the DJ, the integral part of most rap
groups.
Conclusion: Get ready to see and hear a lot more from DJ's and their rappers in the next months. For the first time since disco began will we get the chance to see the DJ put on stage as an artist and this is perhaps the most significant aspect of the entire phenomenon......

WKTU air personality Carlos DeJesus is the host of a new Manhattan cable TW show called 'Music City' which airs five nights a week.

Rickie Ricardo is the newest addition to the staff at WBLS. Billed as 'The Latin from Manhattan' Ricardo is originally from WOKB in Orlando. His air shift is noon at four - right before the Chief Rocker....

Frankie Crocker is still trend-setting to keep WBLS in the running for the top spot in dance music. His latest approach has been to play remixed versions of popular hits by the Strikers, Firefly, the Gap Band, and Kleeer in hot rotation, as well as featuring special mixes of classic oldies such as MFSB's "Love  Is the Message." Top discjockeys including Ted Currier, Jonathan Fearing and Shep Pettibone produce the looped and edited mixes and the station ID montages. Retailers have found these unavailable ttapes among their most demanded produet while WBLS maintains its lead in the market by appealing to the modern music consumers who dominate Ih Apple. Crocker still airs the weekend nighttime "disco parties" while breaking hot advance test pressings during his afternoon air shift. His latest "secret weapon" was Gino Soccio's "Try It Out" which he played daily, weeks before its release. This appears to have helped rather than hindered sales.

Letters: Robert Christgau, Music Editor Village Voice, responds (Volume 4 Issue 7):
I know you folks dance a lot, but how much do you read? Vince Aletti has free-lanced regularly for the Village Voice since I became music editor in 1974 the first lead Riff under my tenure was his review of the Jacksons' "Dancing Machine," and the only reason he hasn't appeared much in recent years is that he was too busy with RFC. The "landmark review section" to which you refer was not devoted exclusively to "rap and street-based r&b records," as you report, though most of it did fall into the category. I have never "eschewed the disco and dance music movement" on the contrary, most rock critics have always regarded me as a disco-symp, and I've always paid close attention to black popular music as both a writer and an editor. Unfortunately, my atten-tion hasn't always been rewarded. I found most circa 1977 disco aesthetically wanting at the time, and I still do (especially album-by-album, as opposed to track-by-track). The tendency of disco is to serve the moment, which is fine as long as it doesn't distort the music's honesty and overview, as it invariably does, or did. When a basically racist music industry was ready to throw dollars at it, disco was ready to be-lieve that all manner of crossover compromises would enable it to lake over ihe world. But that's not how power works. Rockers reacting to the same kind of short-sighted complacency in mainstream rock came up with punk, a far more vital music than golden-age disco, and it wasn't until disco "died" that something similar happened in black dance music. As a critic, I don't feel "that consumer publication music sections should reflect the tastes of the majority of consumers." If I did, I'd be singing hosannas to Barry Manilow, easily the most popular musician in New York right now. It's my job to judge aesthetic quality and advise those who find my judgments wanting to go elsewhere. I think this is a very exciting time in New York's black popular music more specifically on the rap front than in disco 12-inches, by the way. I hope it slays exciting black music has always been the heart, soul, and body of the rock and roll I've devoted my life to. And I hope I can convince my readers to do some exploring. But I'd suggest to the readers of Dance Musk Report that they would be well-advised to do some exploring of their own. Life is more than midnight rhythm and two o'clock peaks, and some of the "rock and esoterica" DMR dismisses so readily still has more to say on the subject than any of the dance records I love most these days. Get the point?

'The New Segregation' Another article that Disco is still releveant and not dead......

'Stars On 12-inch' (something for Patrick Lejeune aka Disco Patrick). Two months ago a record was released by Radio Records, an Atlantic subsidiary. The record, "Stars on 45," was significant to Dance Music Report readers for a number of reasons. First and foremost, the record was inspired by "Bits & and Pieces Pt. Ill" an unauthorized disco mix record featuring a montage of over 25 songs from the Beatles to Lipps, Inc. It was not the first unauthorized mix to be offered for sale through underground channels. There have been at least eight preceeding it and many have followed it. "Bits & Pieces III" was masterfully crafted with almost every edit and mix right on the money. However, the choice of songs was far from perfect with songs like "Rainy Day Feeling" and "Yellow Polka Dot Bikini" having no place on a mix of such stature. At any rate, the record must have sold 50,000 copies world wide and when it got to the Netherlands, someone got the idea of having a band recreate the mix. It was released and was the talk of this year's Midem music marketplace.
Radio Records picked up this copy of an authorized disco mix and it was released by Atlantic as their first commercial 12-inch in years. A disco record in the truest sense of the word and it is an Atlantic priority, charting strong on the pop charts.
"Stars on 45"—still another example of record consumers' unrequited love for disco and dance music.

On 29th May 1981 Frankie Crocker was honored to be 15 years in broadcasting.

Letters: Interesting response from Mark Zimmer, Brooklyn This Ietter is in rebuttal to an article written in DMR volume 4, issue 10 (May 23 - June 5. 1981) by Thurston Davis of Brooklyn, NY.
Mr. Davis states that radio station WKTU should return to it's policy of playing "long extended versions of songs as opposed lo short single versions." I cannot agree with this twisted reasoning. Mr. Davis gives no explanation to this absurd logic, nor does he clarify his objective aim by petitioning WKTU. My view of a radio station is to present music and news to the hungre listening cars of the public. Radio is here to inform us, to entertain us, and hopefully through this medium, for us to enjoy.
I am sure thai if a survey was taken of WKTU's list-ening audience, the majority would rather choose to listen to a short version of a song rather that that all to lengthy special "Disco Mix."
We must realize thai time is taken away from olher new songs being played when an extended version is aired. The opportunity play sacrificed by elongated mixes only hurts the new artists competing for any such airplay... whatsoever. I feel that the appropriale time for extended disco play should be in the party atmosphere of hundreds, if not thousands of persons dancing at their favorite discotheque. Here, the patrons of the dance music arena should find the music more exciting through the use of angmenting techniques, extended breaks, flawless clarity and an overall upgraded sound which the long 12-inch single is supposed to have. I cannot agree with Mr. Davis at all because I (being a disc jockey) occasionally enjoy listening to some of shortened 45 rpm single versions on the radio mainly for the way (or a change) I perceive the record. Disco jocks must realize that it lakes just as much creativity and an artful touch on the chopping block to edit a song without altering its sonority or musical composition than it does to create a "special disco mix." Too many times I have heard extended versions which only loop repetetive rhythm patterns which tend to disrupt the tonality of a song. Many limes I have been al discos where I find the DJ mixing every other song directly on a breakdown, without letting the song develop into its recapi-tulation. It is this type of DJ who seems to forget the purpose of an extended disco mix. Several years ago Tom Moullon brought us the first "disco-mix" version of a song called "Dream World." It was intended to give the disc jockey an opportunity to stimulate the growing crowds at local discos. Without any airplay, the sales of this single zoomed into the tens of thousands in only a few short weeks. To this date, I have never heard "Dream World" on the radio. I wish everyone would realize that most of today's elongated disco versions are only a marketing technique used to force the obsolesence of previous 45 rpm/LP versions and make the buying public purchase their remixed versions, usually at premium prices. This marketing concept tends to extend to product life-cycle of a previous release (usually on a single which is showing a decline in sales and/or airplay). I'm tired of seeing countless remixes of the same song, the same artist and even the same engineer/consultant, when I feel a sell-planned single would suffice. I am appreciative of Mr. Davis' concern to give radio listeners the chance to hear music in a different perspective through the concept of the long version/disco-mix. But I would rather see these people go into a discotheque and hear the full effect of a disco mix for the first time and see them surprized by an unexpected break, which would only compell them to dance. We must not forget the history or original purpose of extended versions and why they are with us today. Therefore, I'm hoping Mr. Davis will direct his energies at more significant problems in today's music world.

If you have been to the Paradise Garage in the last couple of months, you may have heard a special version of 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough' sung by Jocelyn Brown and Inner Life. This month the single will released an Salsoul with a Larry Levan mix...

Infos about panelist on the 1981 New Music Seminar. The amount of new product flooding the market is similar to the over-abundance which was one of the factors which brought the advance of "disco" to a halt in 1979. Only this time it's down tempo funk records that arc coming out by the dozens and for the most part, if you've heard one, you've heard 'em all. This sameness along with rising wholesale prices and the increase being passed along to the consumer causes the possibility of sales picking up to appear limited. However, if labels were to consider the viability of the commercial 12", they might find a strong market among dance music patrons. Many of this week's new chart adds are based on widespread club acceptance. With proper marketing and promotion, several of these have the potential to become across-the-board hits like their predecessors who are currently residing in the DMR top 10.

Otherwise nothing to write home about...

Perhaps one thing: First ad of the Prime Cuts #1 double dance album. One track 'From New York To L.A.' is mentioned. Artist Ice T. (?) It's surely not the Rap-Star! The same track was published on the Disconet series (V3 P6) - also with Ice T.

I remember an AFN-Disco Show where this song was introduced with only Ice......

And: Studio 54 has their liquor licence again...

  New Music Seminar Special Issue

Since Barry Mayo left WGCI in Chicago, there has been a void of progressive programming in that city. But now we are informed that J.J. Jeffries, who was responsible for making KSOL the number one station in northern California, using a contemporary soul-disco format (including programming 12" discs) has left to become P.D. at WBMX in the Windy City.

Jeff Broitman, former producer of Friday and Saturday Night Fever on KRLY in Houston, is now guest producing disco parties on WBLS and WXLO in NY in addition to spinning several nights at Doubles.

Album sales have been relatively slow compared to 12" product, particularly in the East Coast dance belt. Yet the Frankie Smith and Evelyn King 12" have just been deleted in order to generate more proitable LP sales.....

Another item of interest is Ihe instrumental B-side on both promo and commercial 12" versions which is be-coming an industry standard. DJ's are caught in the middle between appreciating the mixing possibilities provided and the additional cost factor. Record companies have seized the vinyl addiction which disc jockeys suffer from and outfits like Motown, who release the instrumental commercially after the vocal version has become popular, stand to make big bucks by refusing to service the DJs with the new 12". There are enough of these instrumental remixes on the market to create an entertaining evening at a club without any lyrics....

Fear seems to be pervading the club scene in NYC. Paradise Garage is the latest club to install a metal detector at the door.

The most noticeable development this month in the dance music business is the sudden turn around by American record labels who are now picking up American licensing rights to numerous 12" pieces which might have been overlooked six months ago. This can be attributed not only to the domestic companies' realization of the demand for dance-oriented product, but also to the improved quality of the imported product. European producers have responded to the demand for funkier slower tempo tunes. These high-quality imports have been aired by progressive radio programmers like Frankie Crocker (at WBLS in NY) whose heavy rotation of cuts by Suzy Q, Nick Straker, Hot Cuisine and Billy Ocean has brought them to the attention of U.S. manufacturers. Label executives noticed that these 12-inches were outselling their current releases, even at a higher cost. Today there is fierce bidding and competition for the hottest dance music from overseas. Other records released, first in other countries which are charted on this issues checklist are: Material, Voggue, Evasions, Vin Zee, The Quick, Lime, Kelly Marie, Prime Cuts, Carol Jiani, Spandau Ballet, Stars on 45, Tom Tom Club and Two Man Sound.

  3rd Anniversary!

This issue marks our third full year of publishing a newsletter dedicated to disco and dance music. We have survived the worst of times with the help and support of hundreds of disco DJs, retailers, and record companies. Over the past year, our circulation has grown enormously and our content will continue to improve and expand as we grow. Disco and dance music are alive and well only because of the faith and persistance of a few thousand individuals who kept the torch burning. We see good things on the horizon for disco and we will be the first to report them as they happen. Thank you readers, for a great three years!

Here's a sample of the Top 15 from Issue 1, Volume 1.

Rare picture of Mr. Magic - premier DJ at WHBI-FM.

Studio 54 has reopended under the ownership of  Mark Fleischmann´. Featured DJ's Viviano Almonte and Roy Thode.

Exciting changes taking place on the airwaves in the Windy City. Veteran announcer Herb Kent, who has been extremely supportive of dance music on his WXFM punk-funk hour, will be joining the WVON staff on the 7-11 evening shift six days a week. Kent has programmed hot mixes, imports and other noncom-mercial product which receives little attention on any other station. His success wihl this progressive format has brought him once again to the forefront of black radio in Chicago.

It seems sure that New York's rock stations will be doing little to support or foster the growth of the dance community, although ever bolder experim-entation by BLS and KTU gives us some reason to listen to the radio...

Over the past few months, there has been a noticeably widening rift in the types of dance music which are popular on the East and West coasts. The East Coast paticularly the NY metropolitan, has embraced an R&B downtempo groove while West Coast devotees remain partial to a lusher more upbeat sound once classified as Euro-Disco which has charac-terized import releases for several years.
More positions from Vince Aletti, Brian Chin, RFC's Ray Caviano and Jane Brinton.

Club consultant Joe Bingo now hosts "The Dance Show" which airs every Monday between 5 and 6 pm over WDMC-TV, Channel 20 and is broadcast on cable TV. The show which originates in Westchester, NY and boasts an audience of 750,000, concentrates on new releases which have not yet received major radio airplay. According to Joe, "I receive a lot of new product every week and feature what I feel will be the hits of the coming weeks. Once a tune is played on WBLS, WKTU or WRKS, we drop it from the show since the song will carry on its own from there. New releases are often "hot" in the clubs and rinks, and the radio stations are usually a few weeks behind. What I try to do is act as a go-between for the major radio stations and the new "hot" music being played in the clubs and rinks. Listeners can'also call me at the studio with their reaction. It's unbelievable how many people call in with their responses.....

The Medley Phenomenon by Stephanie Shepherd:
Within the past year, medleys have developed into a primary mixing tool for DJ's and have catered to the public which is yearning to relive those fond memo-ries of the past twenty years. Although this trend is not likely to make a lasting impact the current demand for medley's makes them a phenomenon worth watching.

Year-End Special

1981 - The Year In Review

Quite a good year for dance music which has broadened it's base to include rock, jazz and most notably R&B. New developments in sound - for example Tom  Tom Club 'Wordy Rappinghood',, Devo, Evasions, Was (Not Was), B-52's...

Strong part of radio that gives this music credibility. Particularly in New York, where WBLS, WKTU and WRKS are all programming dance music almost exclusivly and remain the top ratetd stations in the city. And the remixes of songs in heavy rotation by Shep Pettibone, Ted Currier, Jonathan Fearing and Sergio Munzibi, giving the public an additional reason to listen to the radio. The remix of the standart 'Love Is
The Message' by MFSB was the most requested mix of the year.

Instrumental B-sides on commercial 12"s have be-come a sought after item. DJ's like them for the creativity in mixing they provide....

Rare picture of Arthur Baker & Shep Pettibone while mixing 'Jazzy Sensation'.
